What would you name a ROADHEADER?

NAME THE ROADHEADER CONTEST with the CITY of OTTAWA!

Tomorrow during Period 1 & 2 Miss Argue’s class is going to try and come up with a name to call one of the City of Ottawa’s ROADHEADER’s and submit it into this City of Ottawa contest!

Roadheader

A roadheader is a 135 tonne, 5 metre tall piece of equipment that has a boom studded with tungsten carbide “teeth” that will gradually “chew” through the rock underneath downtown Ottawa, moving along at approximately 3 metres per day. Grade 4 classes across Ottawa are invited to submit their suggested names for the three roadheader excavation machines that are digging the downtown tunnel portion of the Confederation Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) project. The City is requesting two English names and one French name for the roadheaders. Only one name per class is permitted. An event will be held in mid to late November where a male and female student representative from each of the selected classes will join the Mayor, a federal and provincial representative and Chairs Deans and Egli to announce the selected names at City Hall. All students from the winning classes will then be invited to join the elected representatives for a pizza lunch at City Hall to close the event. Media permission forms must be signed to attend this event as photographs will be taken. Contest ends November 7th at noon.

Any ideas?!?!? Add a comment and we will share it with the class tomorrow morning.

THANKS!!

Picture RETAKE day and Math Quiz tomorrow!

PICTURE RETAKE DAY is tomorrow!

If you want your child to get retakes they need to bring in their old photo envelope with the poses that you did not like OR bring in a note from you saying that they would like a retake.

Math Quiz Tomorrow!

Our math quiz will be on the following:

– Representing numbers is different ways – standard form, expanded form, words, base ten block drawings

– Ordering numbers from least to greatest or greatest to least

– Comparing numbers using < , > or =

– Word problem related to these concepts where students have to explain their answer in words, pictures and/or numbers.

Please note that Grade 3’s are working with numbers up to 1 000 and the Grade 4’s are working with numbers up to 10 000.

This is the first quiz for our Number Sense and Numeration unit. There will be more concepts that we will be covering in this unit but I always like to split up the unit with small quizzes to ensure that students are understanding the concepts taught. Here is a preview of what we will be working on next week:

Grade 3’s

– Represent and describe relationships between coins and bills up to $10 (Example – There are eight quarters in a toonie and ten dimes in a loonie)

– Round two-digit numbers to the nearest ten

Grade 4’s

– Read and represent money amounts to $100 (Example – five dollars, two quarters, one nickel and four cents is $5.59)

– Round four-digit numbers to the nearest, ten, hundred and thousand.

THANKS!

Miss Argue  🙂
