This Holiday season our class and other classes from WEJ paired up with Home Instead Senior Care in order to brighten the life of a senior living in our community. Students created and sent a HOLIDAY CARD with a warm message to a senior. Last year, Mr. Jackson’s class and Miss Argue’s class made just over 90 cards for Seniors.
THIS YEAR……..(drum roll please….) we sent 262 HOLIDAY CARDS TO SENIORS in our community!!!
A big thank you to the following classes who participated: Ms. Jo-Anne’s SK class, Ms. Cleiman & Ms. Martinak’s Grade 1 class, Ms. Duncan’s Grade 2 class, Ms. McIntyre’s Grade 2 class, Mr. Jackson’s Grade 3 class, Mr. Small’s Grade 3 class, Ms. Shank’s Grade 4/5 class, Mme. Gunn and Ms. Wilson’s Grade 4/5 MFI class and Mr. Bradley’s Grade 5/6 class.
Below are some pictures of our class making our cards and the GIGANTIC Christmas tree that we made with all 262 cards we collected. WAY TO GO WEJ!!!

A look ahead this week:
In Language Arts, we are going to writing a movie review on the movie WALLE that we watched in class on Friday. Students have to write a short synopsis of the movie (without giving away the ending) and also talk about elements of the movie (animated graphics, music in the backgraound, special effects) and how they added or took away from the whole movie experience. Students will also talk about their favourite character and why they enjoyed this character. We will be completing this movie review in class 🙂
NOTE – If your child was not at school on Friday, please discuss with them at home a movie that they have watched recently and that they have enough ideas on to write a movie review on instead.
Wednesday
Students will be helping Ms. JoAnne’s SK class make and decorate gingerbread houses made from graham crackers. Students in our class will also be building and creating a gingerbread house to take home. We are asking students to bring in candy to help decorate their houses (a note was printed off and put in your child’s agenda last week). Remember to send in peanut free candy like skittles or smarties (more examples on the sheet that was sent home). We are also looking for donations of graham crackers as well 🙂
Thursday
GIFT EXCHANGE! It is tradition in Miss Argue’s class that we complete a gift exchange on the last day of school before the winter holiday break. Students are asked to bring in a wrapped gift that is gender neutral that is no more than $5. Some ideas are: $5 gift card to somewhere (Chapters, Dairy Queen) or items from the dollar store (mechanical pencils, cool notebook, markers, neat erasers or candy). Students will be picking numbers and opening up gifts the last 2 periods of the day on Thursday.
THANKS!
Miss Argue 🙂

Just a reminder that all students personal timelines are due tomorrow!
Math
The math worksheet that students completed on Friday will be coming home today. The worksheet was on telling time in different ways on Analog Clocks and also telling timing on Digital Clocks. Students can complete their corrections at home and get it signed and they can earn $200.
We are finishing up our measurement units in Grade 3 and 4 this week. Students will be reviewing & practicing concepts learned in class and there will be a quiz on Thursday.
This is what you can review with your child:
– Measuring lines is cm and/or mm with a ruler
– Drawing lines to create a closed shape in mm and/or cm and labeling the correct line segments.
-Estimating the lengths and widths of shapes and lines.
– Choosing and explaining what units you would use to measure different things. Example -What unit would you use to measure the width of your finger nail? Why? What unit would you use to measure your height? Why?
– Re-writing units of measure to show relationships between units. Example – I am 153 cm tall OR I am 1 meter and 53 cm tall. I travelled 23 km on the weekend or I travelled 2300 m on the weekend.
– Telling time on analog and digital clocks (Grade 3’s – nearest 5 minutes. Grade 4’s – nearest minute).
– Calculating elapsed time. Example – If you go out for recess at 1:4opm and come back inside at 2:05pm, how long are you outside for? If you get home from school at 4:30pm and go to bed at 8:45pm, how much time do you have after school before you have to go to bed?
Students will also be working on practicing their problem solving skills to solve a word problem related to time and/or measurement this week. We will be practicing ways to approach a word problem so that it is easier for students to start them. Example – Step #1 – Write down any information that you already know from the quetsion. Step #2 – Highlight or underline what the question is asking you…..etc.
Let me know if you have any questions!
Miss Argue 🙂
In math today, students completed a worksheet on telling time with analog clocks and digital clocks. The sheet will be coming home tonight and if students get it signed and do their corrections, they can earn $200.
CHANGE – SHEETS WILL COME HOME ON MONDAY!!! FORGOT TO PASS OUT AT THE END OF THE DAY!!!
Scholastic orders are due on Monday! Miss Argue wants to put the order in first thing Monday morning so that our books arrive before the Holiday break!
Reminder – Personal Timelines are due on Tuesday!
Have a great weekend!
Miss Argue 😀
Today we worked with clocks in class and got a chance to practice telling time!
Grade 3’s are working on telling time with analog clocks to the nearest five minutes and Grade 4’s are working on telling time with analog clocks to the nearest minute.
Grade 3 H.W. pg. 119 #4-7
Grade 4 H.W. pg. 139 #4-6
Most students finished it in class or used their time during library to finish it up.
ARTIFACT PRESENTATION is tomorrow! Remember to bring in your artifacts to share and explain why you chose them with the class. We will be doing the presentations during Period 5 & 6.
Timeline Assignments are due next Tuesday. I’m excited to see them all! 🙂
Miss Argue 🙂
Social Studies
The Grade 3’s and 4’s have both started their new units in Social Studies. The Grade 3’s are looking at Early Settlers in Canada and the Grade 4’s are looking at Early Civilizations Around the World.
At the start of our units, we have talked about how an archelogist is “a scientist who studies ancient peoples and the way they lived. The are like detectives who try to uncover or dig up the past”. We also talked about how an artifact is something that an archeologist digs up or finds and can help the archeologist learn more about the past.
The grade 3’s and 4’s are asked to bring in 5 possessions or artifacts that they would leave behind to help future archaeologists understand the way we lived. You will need to bring in your 5 artifacts on Thursday, December 5th and present and explain why you chose your artifacts to the class. I have provided cue cards to students who wanted them in case they want to write down their ideas before sharing it with the class.
As we take a look back into history, it is important for the Grade 3’s and 4’s to have a concept of what period of time we will be studying and how it relates to our current day. All students will be looking at timelines and when important events occurred during the unit they are studying. Therefore, both grades will be completing a PERSONAL TIMELINE assignment.
Today in class, students received the good copy paper for their personal timeline with a rubric glued on the back of it on how it will be marked. Students have had some class time to work on this but the good copy is to be completed at home. Students can write out their timeline by hand or type it up on the computer and cut it out and glue it on. Make sure to add drawings or pictures to your timeline as well.
Personal Timelines will be due Tuesday, December 10th, 2013.
Here is the sheet that has the instructions for both of these assignments:
Personal Timeline & Artifact Assignment-Grade 3
Personal Timeline & Artifact Assignment-Grade 4
Math
Today in math both the Grade 3’s and Grade 4’s learned about PERIMETER. Perimeter is the total distance around a shape.
Grade 3 H.W. pg. 115 #5,6,7
Grade 4 H.W. pg. 135 #3,4,6
We are practicing writing our the Perimeter formula, showing our calculations and then the final answer with units.
P = S 1 + S 2 + S 3 + S 4
= 8 + 4 + 8 + 4
= 24 cm
Where P stands for Perimeter and S stands for side. Every perimeter formula may be different as it depends on how many sides you have on the shape that you are measuring.
THANKS!
Miss Argue 🙂
