Scholastic & Our Class and School Libraries

Hello all!

Here is a little update on how families can order books through Scholastic this year as well as how our class and school libraries are going to be running this year because of the safety procedures put into place because of COVID. Please let me know if you have any questions!

Scholastic

I just wanted to let you know that our class will have the opportunity to order books from Scholastic this year!

This year, Scholastic has moved to an online viewing and ordering system so you can browse the book flyers online and add the books to your shopping cart from there. I will be sending home a purple sheet with your child tonight that shows you the first page of the new online book flyer with our class code on it. You do need a class code to order books so here it is again:

Ms. Laura Argue – CLASS CODE – RC204434

I have also linked the pages that would be at your child’s reading/grade level for you to have quick access to. Please feel free to shop any grade that you like though!

Scholastic also has a search tool that you can use to search specific books that you might be looking for! Please let me know if you have any questions.

Our Classroom Library

I have brought in my own books from home for students to read in our classroom. These books will remain at school. Our new class system for borrowing books is you get to pick a book on Monday and it is to be returned on Thursday to a bin and it will sit without being touched for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Some students are finishing their book before the week is over so I am welcoming parents to allow their child to bring in a book from home to read as well. If you have any books at home that your child has outgrown or is not reading anymore and you are looking to get rid of them, please send me an email to see if I could take them and add them to our classroom library!

Our School Library

Our school library is currently closed due to Covid but our school librarian has sent out a questionnaire to students to fill out so she can begin to pick out books for students to read and will sign them out for them. Stay tuned for more information on the blog about when this will be starting.

Please check at home to see if your child has any library books from last March! I received a list of books that students had signed out from last year (if you were at WEJ) that our librarian is still looking for.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

Ms. Argue 🙂

Science – PLANT QUIZ next Tues. June 11th

Students will be having their SCIENCE QUIZ on PLANTS next Tuesday, June 11th.

Ms. Moretti is making sure to send home their Science duotangs tonight so you can review their notes with them over the weekend & next week. They also wrote out in class what they needed to review for the quiz – the list is the same as what I posted below and is at the back of their duotangs.

Here are the topics that you can review/study with your child at home:

  • What are the parts of a plant and their function?
  • How do plants disperse their seeds to reproduce?
  • What things do plants need to survive?
  • Name things that plants have in order to protect themselves from predators (e.g. thorns on a rose bush, chemical that irritates like poison ivy)
  • Plant parts that you can eat: Ex. – Root – the orange part of a carrot is the root of the plant; Stem – the long stalk of the celery is the stem of this plant; Flower – broccoli is the flower part of the plant etc.
  • Differences between a fibrous and taproot

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks for your support!

Ms. Argue 🙂

Media Literacy – Commercial Assignment

This past week in class, Ms. Moretti got the opportunity to talk about what a commercial is and why we have them. Students then got a chance to watch a commercial and talk about the following:

– What is the commercial advertising? (What product or service are they trying to sell?)

– Who is the target audience?

– What slogan is used by the company?

– What is the message? (What is the commercial really saying about the product being advertised)

– Do you think this is an effective commercial? Explain why or why not and give reasons to support your answer.

Students watched the following Sketchers Running Shoe Commercial in class. Click on this link to see the commercial that we looked at :

Task

I am asking students to go home and with the help of their parents/grandparents or older sibling, find a commercial that is appropriate to share with the class. They will have to talk about what the message is, who the target audience is and if it is effective or not and what the commercial is actually advertising. Students will then be showing their commercial and present their findings to the class starting on Thursday, June 6th. Students will have to have the web address or what “key words” they used to find it on YouTube as we will be watching it on the “big screen” in our class!

Students received this worksheet this past week: Media Literacy – Analyzing a Commercial-136uu2r – Students can complete this sheet at home and it will be used to help them present their commercial to the class.

Here is an example of how we filled out the sheet for the Sketchers Running Shoes Cheetah Commercial: Media Literacy – Analyzing a Commercial EXAMPLE-pr73vi Students have a copy of this sheet on the back of the blank sheet and they will be bringing it home so you can use this as a reference.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

THANKS for your support!

Ms. Argue :)

What commercial will you chose??? Here are some other examples that we looked at in class. I can’t wait to see what commercials students find to show the class!

Update on Ms. Argue & Fifth’s at WEJ

Hello all!

I just wanted to give you all an update on my absence & Fifth’s disease at WEJ.

I am now 33 weeks pregnant but off on leave because there was 2 more cases of confirmed Fifth’s disease at WEJ last week. I am unfortunately not immune to Fifth’s (meaning I’ve never had it) and while it does not pose a threat to kids or adults who get it, it is not good if I get it while pregnant as it can cause complications for the baby. We have been lucky enough to have Ms. Patricia Moretti in our class while I have been gone. I have been sending her plans each day & students are keeping on track with all of the units that we are trying to finish up before the end of the school year which is great! I am due to be back at WEJ on Tues. May 28th as long as there are no new cases of Fifth’s Disease reported so fingers crossed! I am missing being in the classroom so much but I am so grateful that Ms. Moretti is taking great care of our students while I’m gone. If you have any questions, you can still reach me at laura.argue@ocdsb.ca or patricia.moretti@ocdsb.ca if you have any questions.

Thanks!

Ms. Argue 🙂

P.S. – My due date is June 30th so my plan is to work right up until the end of the school year so I can finish out the year with our great grade 3 class!

Volunteers confirmed – Thank you!!

Thank you so much to those of you who emailed & said you could volunteer tomorrow! We now have 4 parents attending with our class and part of Ms. Lydia Brown’s class. Lydia Brown is a grade 3 teacher at WEJ who we share our gym time with and she will be taking students to our Swim to Survive lesson tomorrow. Ms. Moretti will be staying back and looking after the rest of Ms. Brown’s grade 3 class.

We will have our last Swim to Survive lesson next week on a Thursday, May 16th and we still need a few more volunteers for this session as well. If you can help out from 12pm – 2:45pm please email me at laura.argue@ocdsb.ca – the last session is when students complete their swim test which is always fun to watch!

Thanks again!

Ms. Argue 🙂
