Homework Duotangs are starting this week!

Tonight your child will be coming home with their orange homework duotang!

For Term 1, we will be focusing on math practice and cursive writing. Inside your child’s duotang you will find:

  • A weekly math sheet

  • A cursive writing practice sheet

The math practice sheets will start out easy and get progressively harder. They cover math concepts throughout all of the strands of math in grade 3 that students will be learning about this year.

The cursive writing sheets are so students can learn how to form cursive letters correctly and then learn how to join letters together. I learned how to cursive write when I was in school but it is no longer in the curriculum so this is a great at home task to practice.

Homework duotangs will be going home on Mondays and are due back to school on Thursdays.

It is up to your child to find time at home to complete the assigned sheets. The sheets can be completed all in one day or night or can be spread out throughout the week – the choice is yours!

I believe that these homework duotangs will teach students to take initiative to complete a small amount of work at home each week which will help to prepare them for entering into the junior grades next year. I also believe that it will teach them responsibility because they have to bring back the completed work each week and hand it in to me. If at anytime something comes up and your child can not complete their homework duotangs, please send a note in the agenda or an email so I know ahead of time.

If you have any questions about the homework duotangs, please let me know!

Thanks for your support!

Math – Number Sense & Numeration

In math, we have been working on the Number Sense and Numeration strand and have been practicing representing, comparing and ordering numbers from 0-1000. We have been working with base ten blocks an other manipulatives to practice representing numbers in different ways.

Students have been working in their blue duotangs to practice these concepts. Some students are bringing home their blue duotangs tonight to catch up and finish some independent practice sheets we have been doing in class. Please finish up these sheets at home and send them back to school tomorrow with you child.

Thanks for your support!

Primary Math Problem of the Week

The Primary Math Problem of the Week has started again at WEJ!

Every week Mr. Stratford visits primary classrooms and hands out the math problem to students who want to give it a try. He usually hands out a grade 1/2 question and grade 2/3 question. Both questions are based on similar math concepts but might differ in the level of difficulty.

Here are this weeks questions:

Grade 1/2

Grade 2/3

Students can complete these questions in class in their spare time, at home with the help from parents, grandparents or siblings or at recess with their friends.

All students who attempt the question will be entered into a draw to win a $20 Masterminds Toy gift card at the end of the term.

The math problems of the week will be handed out on Mondays and must be handed in by Thursday so they can be displayed on our upstairs bulletin board on Fridays.

The Math Problem of the Week is a great way for your child to demonstrate initiative and practice applying their knowledge of math concepts as well as practice their problem solving strategies.

Thankful

With Thanksgiving happening this weekend, we spent some time this week as a class reflecting on what we are thankful for. We brainstormed ideas as a class and then students had an opportunity to reflect on what they are thankful for. Here is what they came up with:

There are a few students whose Thankful tree isn’t posted on here yet so I sent it home so they can finish it.

I hope everyone has a great long weekend with friends and family!

Happy Thanksgiving!!
