Today was our first…CLASS AUCTION!!

So…today was our first CLASS AUCTION!

Students have been working hard doing their classroom jobs, bringing back assignments and quizzes signed and completing their homework duotangs each week to try and earn money to their school bank account! And today was the day that they get to bid on different classroom prizes and spend it!

In Language Arts, we have been practicing writing PERSUASIVE LETTERS. Students got a chance to write a letter asking me to buy a certain prize for the first auction. They had to support their choices with reasons why it would be a suitable prize to buy for the class.

This was the format that students had to follow for their persuasive letter:

– Date
– Greeting
– Introduce yourself (if required)
– A description of what you are asking for
– Detailed reasons to support what you are asking for
– Flattery – maybe compliment the person you are writing to 🙂
– Closing
– OPTIONAL – Post-Script (P.S.) – in case you want to add something else to your letter after you are done writing it!

I was really impressed with the great reasons that some of the students came up with for buying the prize that they wanted. Also, there was lots of flattery!!

Here are the letters:

The auction was a huge success! Students had a great time bidding on prizes and subtracting the amount that they spent from their school bank accounts.

I hope that everyone has a great night tonight!
Happy Halloween from Ms. Argue’s class!

Halloween Costumes – Wed. Oct. 31st

Halloween Costumes – Wednesday, October 31st

WEJ is celebrating Halloween on Wednesday, October 31st with a full costume day for all our students. Students can wear costumes or orange and black if they choose. Please try to avoid masks as they make learning difficult during the day. We also ask that props such as weapons are left at home.

Thanks!

A note about User ID’s and Passwords in your child’s agenda

I just wanted to write a quick post about the User ID’s and Passwords that you might have noticed in your child’s agenda last night. Each student in the OCDSB receives an User ID and Password so that they can login into technology at our school. Over the next few weeks, we will begin to use the chromebooks to type some of our writing assignments. Students will be logging into a chromebook, learning to open a google document and typing their writing. Their User ID and Password is in their agenda as they should have this at school every day so we can use it when we need it.

At the moment, students do not need to do anything with their User ID’s and Passwords at home. We will be using them at school only. If this changes, I will let you know!

Thanks!

Reminders for tomorrow!

Just a few reminders for tomorrow:

  • Math Quiz – Students will be having a math quiz on representing, comparing and ordering numbers tomorrow. They went home today with their blue duotangs and inside is a practice quiz that we completed yesterday. Please take some time tonight to review any problem areas your child might have had.
  • Homework Duotangs – Students should be bringing back their orange homework duotangs each Thursday.
  • Halloween Family Fun Night – WEJ’s school fundraiser is kicking off tomorrow after school from 5:30-7:30pm! Come out in your costume and play some games and grab some treats and support WEJ!
  • Grocery Store Flyers – I asked students to bring in any grocery store flyers that they might have at home for our class to use for a math lesson – if you have some at home, please send them in!
  • Agendas – Students are writing in their agendas each and every day so please be sure to check your child’s agenda as some homework and assignments or quizzes that need to get signed are not always posted on the blog. I am trying to teach students in my class that they need to take initiative to go home and show their parents their agenda and give them any forms or work that needs to be signed. If your child is not showing you their agenda, please ask them about this.
  • Signed Assignments and Quizzes – students have brought home their Terry Fox Writing Assignment on Character Traits (white piece of paper with an attached purple rubric), an Oral Presentation Rubric (blue) and a Science Quiz on Forces. Students were to get parents to sign/initial it and then bring it back to school for a chance to earn money to their bank account. If you still have these items at home, please sign them and send them back into school with your child.
  • New teacher starting on Friday – A letter went home with students tonight (yellow sheet of paper) stating that Miss Kaell has accepted a contract position at a new school. We want to wish her the best of luck with her new position! Students had a chance to meet Miss Samantha Green today in class who will be taking over and teaching our class on Fridays. Stay tuned for a blog post introducing herself in the next couple of weeks.

That is all for now! Thanks and please let me know if you have any other questions!

Math – Number Sense & Numeration

In math, we have been working on the Number Sense and Numeration strand. Your child has been working with numbers from 0 – 1000. In class we have been focusing on representing  and describing numbers such as 894 in a variety of ways and situations (e.g. standard form, expanded form, in words, using base ten blocks, sketching a model, etc.). Relationships among numbers and among digits in numbers has been emphasized as well as students have had to rename, compare and order numbers.

Here are the expectations that we have covered in this first unit according to the Ontario Math Curriculum:
– represent, compare, and order whole numbers to 1000, using a variety of tools (e.g., base ten materials or drawings of them, number lines with increments of 100 or other appropriate amounts);
– read and print in words whole numbers to one hundred, using meaningful contexts (e.g., books, speed limit signs);
– identify and represent the value of a digit in a number according to its position in the number (e.g., use base ten materials to show that the 3 in 324 represents 3 hundreds);
– compose and decompose three-digit numbers into hundreds, tens, and ones in a variety of ways, using concrete materials (e.g., use base ten materials to decompose 327 into 3 hundreds, 2 tens, and 7 ones, or into 2 hundreds, 12 tens, and 7 ones);

Here are some activities that you and your child can do to practice some of these concepts at home:

  • You and your child can play a game using two sets of number cards labelled 0 to 9. Shuffle the cards and, without looking, choose 2 cards to form a 2-digit number. Ask your child to say the number, and to write the number in expanded form using numbers and words. For example, 75 can be made from two cards numbered 7 and 5. In expanded form, it is written as 70 + 5 and in expanded form with words, it is 7 tens 5 ones. After your child has had lots of practice with 2-digit numbers, you can play the same game with 3-digit numbers, using three sets of numbered cards.
  • Say aloud various 2- and 3-digit numbers and ask your child to find the cards to make the numbers.
  • Choose a book with a large number of pages. Open the book to a random page and ask your child to tell you the numbers 1 greater than, 1 less than, 10 greater than, and 10 less than the page number.

Today students completed a practice math quiz on these concepts. I will be marking it and sending home with them on Wednesday in their blue duotang so that they can review these concepts and be prepared for the actual quiz this Thursday, October 25th!

A great way for your child to practice is to try the Online Quizzes for each lesson on the Nelson Math website.

The quizzes that students can complete are:

Chapter 2 – Numeration

Lesson 1 – Representing Numbers

Lesson 2 – Renaming Numbers

Lesson 5 – Comparing and Ordering
