October is walk to school month!

Dear Parents,

Ottawa Public Health is promoting active transportation again this year.

Participating in active transportation events, including the International Day IWALK and International Month Walk to School, is a way to increase awareness of the benefits of active travel.

This year, International IWALK Day is October 3rd and International Month Walk to School is from October 1st to October 31st.

We have registered WEJ to take part in this.

Participating elementary and schools will be eligible for the prize draw (free swimming or skating passes at City of Ottawa facilities).

Thank you and have a good walk!

Upcoming In-School Art Workshop with artist Amie Talbot

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We are excited to announce that artist Amie Talbot will be visiting our Grade 3 classrooms on October 9th and 10th. The ‘field trip that comes to us’ will be for one hour and 30 minutes on technical drawing skills and proper colouring fundamentals. This interactive and hands-on presentation will compliment your child’s learning of our Art unit on using lines and shapes to create a drawing on paper.

The artist’s Primary Program gives students the opportunity to further expand their technical drawing skills and learn proper colouring fundamentals. The workshop will begin with a “growth mindset” introduction by the artist who will share and discuss drawing tools, concepts and original works of art. The artist will then lead the students through a drawing exercise using lines & shapes to create a drawing on paper. At the end, she will discuss proper colouring techniques that the students will apply to their technical drawing.

The cost of the activity is $6.50 per student. This activity can be paid for with cash or cheques that are made payable to W. Erskine Johnston PS. We ask that payments be made by Friday, October 5th. The purple form will be coming home tonight in your child’s agenda (yes, we got our agendas today!). Please fill out and detach the bottom portion of the purple form and send it back to school with your child.

Thanks for your support!

Agendas are here!!

Just a note to let you know that our AGENDA’s have arrived at WEJ!!

Each student received an agenda today in class. I wrote their first and last name on the front cover.

In our class, students will be given around 5 minutes at the end of the day to copy down what they need to write in their agenda for that day. I will be initialing it each day before they leave the classroom. It is your choice whether you initial your child’s agenda each night or not. I will not be looking at everyone’s agenda each morning – instead, I like to teach my grade 3’s that if they have a note from a parent, that they need to come and show me first thing in the morning. So, if you write a note to me in your child’s agenda about an appointment or getting picked up early, please let your child know that you wrote a note so that they can take initiative and come and show me. Thanks for your support with this!

It is your child’s responsibility to bring their agenda home each night and to take initiative to show you any notes or homework that they might have. Taking initiative and demonstrating responsibility are two very important skills for every student to learn – they are two of the six learning skills that are made mention of on your child’s report card.

I will still be using the blog to post about what we are doing in our class and any events or school news that you need to know about.

If you have any other questions or concerns that you do not feel you can write in your child’s agenda you can email myself, Laura Argue, at laura.argue@ocdsb.ca or Rebecca Kaell at rebecca.kaell@ocdsb.ca.

Thanks!

Ms. Argue 🙂
