All schools in the OCDSB are CLOSED tomorrow!

A message from our school board:

โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”

All Ottawa-Carleton District School Board schools, program and administrative buildings including the extended day program and infant/toddler programs will be closed tomorrow, Monday, September 24, 2018.

The decision was made in consultation with city emergency services due to extensive power outages and damage to several areas of the city. Ottawa Police have further advised that efforts should be made to reduce the number of people and traffic moving throughout the city due to areas that have been more significantly impacted.

The safety of our students, families and staff, is our top priority. Given the significant number of schools that remain without power, and the continued repair work needed in our schools, we feel that this is the best way to ensure student and staff safety.

School closures mean there is no before and after school care, and no community use of schools/extracurricular use of schools on Monday, September 24.

We anticipate that most schools, programs and buildings will resume regular operations on Tuesday, September 25th.ย  We will provide updates on school openings by 4:00 p.m. daily on our website and social media. Our apologies for any inconvenience.

So our school, W. Erskine Johnston, will be closed to students & teachers tomorrow – Monday, September 24th. Please stay tuned for more updates. I will post any more statements from our board on this blog to keep everyone updated.

Stay safe,

Ms. Argue

Carp Fair Field Trip Tomorrow!

Just a reminder that our Carp Fair field trip is tomorrow! Students will be leaving WEJ at 9:30am sharp and returning to WEJ by 2:00pm. Please send your child with their normal lunch, snacks & a water bottle. Students are allowed to bring up to $10 to buy a treat if they want but this is optional. Students will be touring the fairgrounds & learning what rural life is all about! Students are not allowed to go on any rides or play games.

Please dress for the weather as it might rain tomorrow – rubber boots or outdoor shoes plus a rain jacket and extra socks would be recommended as it is an outdoor field trip but there are lots of buildings & tents to go into in case itโ€™s wet.

Miss Kaell will be taking our class on the field trip tomorrow as she works on Fridays but I will be heading over to the fair with my son and husband to meet our class! We are hoping to meet up with our class to watch the Rock the Arts farm themed puppet show (my sisterโ€™s company) in the Family Circle tent tomorrow which will be great!

Stay tuned for pictures from this great field trip!

Read Aloud – The Koala Who Could

The first book that I decided to read to our grade 3 class this year was the picture booked entitled, “The Koala Who Could” by Rachel Bright.

Before I read this book to the class, I showed them the following quote that related to the book’s message:

As a class, we talked about what this quote meant to us. We talked about how if you don’t try, you will never know what you can achieve.

After discussing the quote, I then read them “The Koala Who Could”.ย This book is about a koala named Kevin who spends his days sitting in his eucalyptus tree watching the animals on the ground below participate in fun activities. The animals always invite Kevin to come down and play, but Kevin always says no and stays in the comfort of his tree. One day, Kevin is surprised by the sound of a bird tapping at his tree! The animals encourage him to un-cling from his tree but Kevin is worried. He ends up falling out of his tree and landing safely on the ground below. He soon realizes that being on the ground is okay and begins to feel great and plays with the other animals.

After we finished the book, we talked about how many books have a message.

Students then had to try and figure out what the author’s message was for the book, “The Koala Who Could”. They also got a chance to create their own Koala! Scroll down below to find your child’s work. Y

Students did a great job on their first reading response! Stay tuned for our next read aloud and response.

Carp Fair Field Trip this Friday, September 21st!

THIS Friday,ย September 21st, all classes in grades 3-4 from WEJ willย board the buses and head towards the grassy fields of Carp for the WORLDโ€™s BEST FAIR!!
This year is theย CARP FAIRโ€˜s 155th anniversary, so it should be a great day at this amazing country event.ย This field trip ties into the social studies and science curriculum in the primary and junior grades and allows our city students to dive into the rural life and community!
The cost of this trip isย $7.00ย for the students (to cover the cost of the busses). The permission forms are coming home today.ย Please detach the last page, fill it in, and return the form and the $7.00 as soon as possible (by this Wednesday please!) to me.ย Thank you!
If you would like to come with us, please indicate your interest on your childโ€™s permission form.ย I am hoping to have four parent volunteers come with us to the Fair on Friday. There will be room for these parents to ride on the bus with us and admission will be free for them as well. The field trip buses to the Carp Fair will be leaving WEJ at 9:30am and will return to the school by 2:00pm. It should be a wonderful time at the Fair this Friday for all of us!
