I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and happy new year!
Today in class, we took some time to reflect and make new goals for 2014. Students looked at the goals that they made up at the beginning of the school year and reflected on whether they still need to work on them or if they have achieved them.
Students worked on creating new goals under the following categories:
– Goals in Class
-Goals at Play
-Goals at Home
-Goals with Friends

Today in the computer lab, we had a chance to start our newest Media Literacy task on analyzing commercials. We looked at various commercials advertising different products – some examples included: Sketcher Running Shoes, VW Car, Coca Cola and McDonald’s.
As a class, we analyzed the Cheetah Sketcher Running Shoes commercial and these are the ideas that came up with:
Commercial – Click on the link to see the commercial Cheetah & Sketcher Running Shoe Commercial
Product: Sketcher Running Shoes
Target Audience:
– Runners
– Athletes
– Teenagers / Young Adults
– 8-10 year olds – who might convince their parents to buy these shoes for them 🙂
Slogan Used by Company:
Designed for Speed
Message:
If you buy these shoes, you will be as fast as a cheetah!
Do you think this is an effective commercial? Explain why or why not?
We think its an effective commercial because it is funny and so unrealistic and impossible for a human to tackle and take down a cheetah when it is running. Also, the animals in the commercial are cute – winks at the audience 😉 . The commercial also has great graphics and looks realistic when the cheetah and human are running (we talked about how this was computer generated and not real). The commercial also had intense music (bongo drums) that added to the commercial by making scary or entertaining for the audience. We think this commercial was very entertaining and funny and grabbed the audiences attention and would make you remember this commercial and probably the running shoes as well.
MEDIA LITERACY TASK:
I am asking students to find a commercial at home on the internet (with parental guidance and support) that is appropriate to show the class. Students will have to fill out the Analyzing a Commercial Worksheet which I sent home today in their agendas or here is an electronic copy of it: Media Literacy – Analyzing a Commercial
Students will then show their commercial to the class using the class projector (with my help) and share the information they wrote on their worksheet. This task is due: MONDAY, JANUARY 13th.
Here are some examples of commercials that I showed the class today. Click on the links to watch the commercials and get an idea of a commercial that your child can use for his/her media literacy task.
Hint – Pick a product or company and then search for commercials related to it 🙂
