Hello All!
I hope you all had a great long weekend and had some time to get outside and enjoy the sunshine! Here is the work for your child to complete this week. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns as I’m always here to help! You can email me at laura.argue@ocdsb.ca. Please remember that you know your child best so please decide what you and your child can complete.
Work for the Week of May 18th, 2020
LANGUAGE ARTS
Reading
Students can continue to practice reading any books that they have at home. Students can also continue to read on Raz-Kids or on EPIC. Mrs. Nia and I are in the process of trying to switch the class over on EPIC to my login so stay tuned for when that happens. In the meantime, you can read to your child and they can read to you daily with whatever books you have in your home or with whatever online reading program you and your child enjoy using.
READING CHALLENGE for the WEEK – Send me a picture of you and your child or just your child reading one of their favourite books and I will post it on the blog at the end of the week (with your permission of course)! My hope is to show everyone in the class a new book that they are reading and students will be able to see their classmates reading as well. Stay tuned!
Writing
We will be contining with our words of the week! This week’s words are: thank, them, then, think
Here are some new ways that you can practice and learn about them:

This week in writing, students will get the opportunity to read (or have someone read it to them) a letter from their new teacher, Ms. Argue! I took a picture of the letter that I wrote to students below.
*Click or tap an image to enlarge it in a new screen*

You can read the letter to your child once through and then talk about what makes this piece of writing a letter. Your child might notice that their is a date at the top of the page or that I signed my name at the bottom of the letter. You can discuss the parts of a letter with your child and read through the letter one more time.
Parts of a Letter
– Date
–Â Greeting (Dear_____, Greetings_____, To ______,)
– Body of the letter – includes sentences describing yourself to the other person
– Closing (Sincerely, _____. Yours truly, ______. From, ______.)
– OPTIONAL – students can also include a P.S. (post-script) if they choose to add in any additional ideas at the end of their letter.
Next, students will get the opportunity to write a letter back to their new teacher! If we were in class, we would talk about how we would brainstorm what ideas we might want to include in our letter before writing it. I often introduce students to a WORD WEB. This is a tool that students can use to just jot down their ideas before actually writing their letter and it helps students remember what they want to include in their piece of writing. Here is a template of a word web that you could draw out for your child when writing back to me! I started the word web with 4 sentence starters but feel free to use your own or add more!

After your child has their ideas written out, they can begin their letter! Here is a template that you can follow if you would like. Students can write their letter on whatever type of paper you have on hand at home.

Try to encourage your child to put the date on the top right hand corner of the page and begin their letter with a greeting. Here are some examples of greetings that they could use to start their letter:
- Greetings Ms. Argue!
- Dear Ms. Argue,
- Hello Ms. Argue!
- To Ms. Argue,
Next students will begin by introducing themselves. Their first sentence could be:
- My name is _____________ and I am _____ years old.
Next students will write a few sentences about themselves. It is up to you how many sentences you want or feel your child can write. Here are some examples:
- My favourite colour is ___________.
- My favourite animal is ___________.
- I love to ____________________ with my family.
- My favourite thing to do a sunny day is _____________________.
- My favourite thing to do on a rainy day is ____________________.
- My favourite hobby or pastime is _________________________.
Finally, students will pick a closing to end their letter and write their name. Here are some examples of closings that they could choose to end their letter:
- From, ___________
- Your student, ___________
- Yours truly, ____________
- Sincerely, _____________
If you want a bonus, your child could write a P.S. (Post-script) at the bottom of their letter and add in one more sentence about themselves or a question for me! This is completely optional and not required but always fun to do!
Once your child has written their letter, take a picture of it and/or scan it and send it to me! I am so excited to read all of the letters and learn all about my new students! 🙂
MATH
In Math, we will be revisiting the Number Sense & Numeration strand and looking at money.
In grade 1, students have to be able to:
- identify and describe various coins (i.e. penny, nickel, dime, quarter, loonie and toonie) using coin manipulatives or drawings.
- state the value of each coin (e.g. the value of a penny is 1 cent; the value of a toonie is 2 dollars)
- represent money amounts to 20 cents through investigation using coin manipulatives
Taken from “The Ontario Curriculum Grades 1-8: Mathematics, 2005 (Revised) http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/curriculum/elementary/math18curr.pdf
This week, students will be working on identifying and describing various coins and stating their value. Go and find some coins in your house and match them up with the picture I posted below. Ask your child if they know the names of any of the coins and how much they are worth. You can then go through the sheet and discuss the names of each coin and their value.

Here are the worksheets that students can work on to practice these concepts:

If you would like to have pictures of actual coins, here is a document that you can print that has pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters:

Here is a game that students can play to practice identifying coins:
MathUP – Coin Carnival
Please let me know if you have any questions about coins!
THANK YOU to Mrs. Nia
I wanted students to have the opportunity this week to thank Mrs. Nia for being their amazing grade 1 teacher. Students are invited to write her a thank you note or letter, make her a card, create a poem about her, draw her a picture or simply take a picture of themselves saying thank you. Please take a picture or scan anything your child makes and send to it to my email. My plan is to compile all of the items her students made her and put it into a book and deliver it to her so that she will have it to cherish for many years to come.
FRENCH – From Mme. Sullivan
I will be attempting to post a video of myself on the blog later on in the week! I would like students to be able to see and hear their new teacher – stay tuned and fingers crossed!
That is all for this week! Please let me know if you have any questions!
Thanks and happy learning!
Ms. Argue 🙂
