Check In and Reading Challenge!

I hope everyone has had a great week and tried to stay cool in this heat!

Check InPlease let me know if you have any questions or concerns about this weeks work. I’m getting my bean and sunflower seeds ready to send in the mail to our class and I’m so excited to see which type of seed students will pick to try and grow at home! If you have sent me your choices thank you so much! If you are still working on choosing which seed you would like to recieve that is fine too!

Reading Challenge – Last week I challenged the class to take and share a picture of themselves reading at home. Here are some of the students in our class reading at home. You can still send me a picture of your child reading a book and I will add it to this post. Thanks again for sharing! I also included myself and my kiddos reading at home.

Ibrahim reading “Hot Wheels – Extreme Stunts”

Ivan reading “Aladdin”

Jeremy reading “Pigs” by Robert Munsch

Henry reading “The Pigeon Needs a Bath!” by Mo Willems

Juntao reading “Fantastic Mr. Fox” by Roald Dahl

Saketh reading a book on “Sight” – one of your senses

Juliet reading “Munsch Mania!” – a Robert Munsch collection of books

Camden (Ms. Argue’s son) reading “Road Builders”

Addison (Ms. Argue’s daughter) reading her cloth book called “Jungle Alphabet”

Ms. Argue reading “Don’t Call Me Bear!” by Aaron Blabey

I was so impressed by all of the great books that students are reading at home! Thanks again for sharing your pictures – I’m excited to look for some of these books and add them to our libray at home.

I hope you all have a great weekend!

Take good care,

Ms. Argue 🙂

Learn at Home – Week of May 25th

Hello everyone!

I hope you enjoyed the beautiful sunshine we had this weekend and had a chance to get outside and enjoy the warm weather with your family!

Here is the work for your child to complete this week. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns as I’m always here to help! You can email me at laura.argue@ocdsb.ca. Please remember that you know your child best so please decide what you and your child can complete.

Work for the Week of May 25th, 2020

LANGUAGE ARTS

Reading

Students can continue to practice reading any books that they have at home. Students can also continue to read on Raz-Kids or on EPIC. I am still waiting to hear back from the EPIC support team on transfering the class over to my login so I will let you know when that is finalized. In the meantime, you can read to your child and they can read to you daily with whatever books you have in your home or with whatever online reading program you and your child enjoy using.

READING CHALLENGE for the WEEK – Last week I challenged the class to share a picture of themselves reading. I am extending this challenge for one more week so you still have time to take a picture of yourself with one of your favourite books! I have had a few parents send me a picture of their child but I would love to see more! If you have a chance, please snap a picture of your child and let me know if it is okay if I can post it on the blog later this week. My family will be joining in on the fun and I will snap a picture of Camden and Addison reading their favourite books this week too!

This week in reading, I will be sharing two read aloud books about plants! The first book is called, “This is the Sunflower” by Lola M. Schaefer. Here is a video of the book being read so that your child can listen to it. Pleae click on the link to watch and listen to the story.

The second read aloud that your child can listen to is called “One Bean” by Anne Rockwell. Please click on the link to watch and listen to the story.

After listening to these read alouds, you can ask your child the following questions:

What do you think a sunflower looks like?

What do you think a bean plant look like?

You can prompt your child by asking them to think about what colour each plant is, if the plant is tall or short, if the plant is smooth or prickly, where the plant holds its seeds or anything else you can think of!

Next students will complete the following worksheets. I have attached 2 word documents that you can print out and use or you can just re-create what I have written in the picture below on any paper that you might have at home.

Writing

We will be continuing with our words of the week! This week’s words are PLANT themed: plant, flower, bean, sun, grow

Here are some new ways that you can practice and learn about them:

weekly-word-activities.png (770×501)

Our writing activity this week will compliment the two books that your child has just listened to about the sunflower and bean plant.

Some of you might know from reading about me on the “About Ms. Argue” page on the blog that I love to garden! I grew up with my parents always planting and growing vegetables in our own backyard from a very young age. We would plant peas, green and yellow beans, cucumbers, carrots, onions and pumpkins to name a few! As an adult with my own family, I have continued this tradition and I am going on year 10 of planting a garden in our current home.

For this assignment, your child will have to decide if they were given the chance to receive a sunflower seed or a bean seed to plant, which one would they choose and why. Here is the worksheet that you can print out and use or you can just re-create what I have written in the picture below on any paper that you might have at home.

Click on the link below to open the word document:

Sunflower Seed or Bean Seed

I’m so excited to see what seeds each student picks! If you would like your child to receive a sunflower or bean seed to plant, please send me your mailing address in a quick email along with your child’s choice so I can reply back to your child and send them their seed in the mail!

Math

This week in math, students will be continuing to look at money. Last week, students became familiar with the penny, nickel, dime, quarter, loonie and toonie and the values that they represent. This week, students will use this knowledge and apply it to begin to represent different amonts of money.

Here are the worksheets that students can work on to practice these concepts:

Counting-coins

Coins – How-much?

Buying-3D-shapes

Here is a short quiz about the concepts your child has been learning about on money. You can try this quiz out towards the end of the week or when you and your child feel confident about the concepts they have learned about money.

Coin-Quiz

Please let me know if you have any questions about coins and money!

THANK YOU to Mrs. Nia

Students still have the opportunity to thank Mrs. Nia for being their amazing grade 1 teacher! I am still looking for students to write her a thank you note or letter, make her a card, create a poem about her, draw her a picture or simply take a picture of themselves saying thank you. I have even had a student send a short thank you video! Please take a picture or scan anything your child makes and send to it to my email. My plan is to compile all of the items her students made her and put it into a book and deliver it to her soon so that she will have it to cherish for many years to come.

FRENCH – From Mme. Sullivan

Bonjour Grade 1’s!

This week we are trying a new drawing activity, so you will need to get a paper and a pencil ready. If the description is going too fast for you, simply pause or rewind the video until you think you have it right, then watch to the end to compare your drawing with mine.

I have attached two other pictures that you can try describing to someone else in your family – in French. See if they can get it right.

*Click or tap on an image to enlarge it in a new screen*

If you were able to make a video of yourself performing the song or the dance I would love to see it and maybe share it with other friends in Grade 1 at WEJ. Don’t forget to keep reviewing the play and the song every week so you remember all the vocabulary.

Have a great week!

Mme Sullivan

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Last week, I mentioned I wanted my new students to be able to see and hear from their new teacher. The video of myself is almost ready to be posted on the blog – stay tuned later in the week for a post about it and fingers crossed it works!
That is all for this week! Please let me know if you have any questions!
Thanks and happy learning!
Ms. Argue 🙂
Learn at Home – Week of May 18th
Hello All!
I hope you all had a great long weekend and had some time to get outside and enjoy the sunshine! Here is the work for your child to complete this week. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns as I’m always here to help! You can email me at laura.argue@ocdsb.ca. Please remember that you know your child best so please decide what you and your child can complete.
Work for the Week of May 18th, 2020
LANGUAGE ARTS
Reading
Students can continue to practice reading any books that they have at home. Students can also continue to read on Raz-Kids or on EPIC. Mrs. Nia and I are in the process of trying to switch the class over on EPIC to my login so stay tuned for when that happens. In the meantime, you can read to your child and they can read to you daily with whatever books you have in your home or with whatever online reading program you and your child enjoy using.
READING CHALLENGE for the WEEK – Send me a picture of you and your child or just your child reading one of their favourite books and I will post it on the blog at the end of the week (with your permission of course)! My hope is to show everyone in the class a new book that they are reading and students will be able to see their classmates reading as well. Stay tuned!
Writing
We will be contining with our words of the week! This week’s words are: thank, them, then, think
Here are some new ways that you can practice and learn about them:
weekly-word-activities.png (770×501)
This week in writing, students will get the opportunity to read (or have someone read it to them) a letter from their new teacher, Ms. Argue! I took a picture of the letter that I wrote to students below.
*Click or tap an image to enlarge it in a new screen*
You can read the letter to your child once through and then talk about what makes this piece of writing a letter. Your child might notice that their is a date at the top of the page or that I signed my name at the bottom of the letter. You can discuss the parts of a letter with your child and read through the letter one more time.
Parts of a Letter
Date
– Greeting (Dear_____, Greetings_____, To ______,)
Body of the letter – includes sentences describing yourself to the other person
Closing (Sincerely, _____. Yours truly, ______. From, ______.)
OPTIONAL – students can also include a P.S. (post-script) if they choose to add in any additional ideas at the end of their letter.
Next, students will get the opportunity to write a letter back to their new teacher! If we were in class, we would talk about how we would brainstorm what ideas we might want to include in our letter before writing it. I often introduce students to a WORD WEB. This is a tool that students can use to just jot down their ideas before actually writing their letter and it helps students remember what they want to include in their piece of writing. Here is a template of a word web that you could draw out for your child when writing back to me! I started the word web with 4 sentence starters but feel free to use your own or add more!
After your child has their ideas written out, they can begin their letter! Here is a template that you can follow if you would like. Students can write their letter on whatever type of paper you have on hand at home.
Try to encourage your child to put the date on the top right hand corner of the page and begin their letter with a greeting. Here are some examples of greetings that they could use to start their letter:
  • Greetings Ms. Argue!
  • Dear Ms. Argue,
  • Hello Ms. Argue!
  • To Ms. Argue,
Next students will begin by introducing themselves. Their first sentence could be:
  • My name is _____________ and I am _____ years old.
Next students will write a few sentences about themselves. It is up to you how many sentences you want or feel your child can write. Here are some examples:
  • My favourite colour is ___________.
  • My favourite animal is ___________.
  • I love to ____________________ with my family.
  • My favourite thing to do a sunny day is _____________________.
  • My favourite thing to do on a rainy day is ____________________.
  • My favourite hobby or pastime is _________________________.
Finally, students will pick a closing to end their letter and write their name. Here are some examples of closings that they could choose to end their letter:
  • From, ___________
  • Your student, ___________
  • Yours truly, ____________
  • Sincerely, _____________
If you want a bonus, your child could write a P.S. (Post-script) at the bottom of their letter and add in one more sentence about themselves or a question for me! This is completely optional and not required but always fun to do!
Once your child has written their letter, take a picture of it and/or scan it and send it to me! I am so excited to read all of the letters and learn all about my new students! 🙂
MATH
In Math, we will be revisiting the Number Sense & Numeration strand and looking at money.
In grade 1, students have to be able to:
  • identify and describe various coins (i.e. penny, nickel, dime, quarter, loonie and toonie) using coin manipulatives or drawings.
  • state the value of each coin (e.g. the value of a penny is 1 cent; the value of a toonie is 2 dollars)
  • represent money amounts to 20 cents through investigation using coin manipulatives
Taken from “The Ontario Curriculum Grades 1-8: Mathematics, 2005 (Revised) http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/curriculum/elementary/math18curr.pdf
This week, students will be working on identifying and describing various coins and stating their value. Go and find some coins in your house and match them up with the picture I posted below. Ask your child if they know the names of any of the coins and how much they are worth. You can then go through the sheet and discuss the names of each coin and their value.
Here are the worksheets that students can work on to practice these concepts:
grade-1-money-match-coin-to-name-cdn
grade-1-money-match-coin-to-value-cdn
draw-the-coins-in-piggy-banks
Money -make-that-amount
If you would like to have pictures of actual coins, here is a document that you can print that has pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters:
Money – cut-outs-of-coins-1
Here is a game that students can play to practice identifying coins:
MathUP – Coin Carnival
Please let me know if you have any questions about coins!
THANK YOU to Mrs. Nia
I wanted students to have the opportunity this week to thank Mrs. Nia for being their amazing grade 1 teacher. Students are invited to write her a thank you note or letter, make her a card, create a poem about her, draw her a picture or simply take a picture of themselves saying thank you. Please take a picture or scan anything your child makes and send to it to my email. My plan is to compile all of the items her students made her and put it into a book and deliver it to her so that she will have it to cherish for many years to come.
FRENCH – From Mme. Sullivan
Bonjour Grade 1!
Finally the weather looks like summer, so take some time to get outside and enjoy! As it’s a short, and really nice, week, we would like everyone to simply review the play and the song and dance. We’d love to see you act out the play with puppets, or use some other program to show us you’ve learned all the words! Or practice doing the dance with your family and send us the video. We would love to have a video of WEJ students to share with everyone, so please let me know if we have permission to share your video.
Stay healthy and have fun,
Mme Sullivan
