Looking ahead for Volunteers for our SKATING Field Trip!

Hello all!

I just wanted to let you know that we are planning on going on a field trip to the John G. Mlack Arena (located near the Earl of March Secondary School) in Kanata to skate! We will be walking from WEJ to the rink on the pathways through our Beaverbrook neighborhood.

We will be going with Ms. Brown’s grade 3 class but we will be requiring volunteers in order to make this field trip successful.

What your child needs:

  • a pair of sharpened skates that fit
  • a CSA approved hockey/skating helmet

Image result for csa approved helmet

WEJ has purchased 25 CSA hockey helmets that students can borrow for our field trip. We also have around 10 pairs of skates that have been donated to the school that students can try on and borrow if they don’t have any.

Here are the details you need to know:

Dates and Times

  • Tuesday, March 26th – Leave WEJ at 10:15am – on ice from 11am-12pm – Return to WEj by 12:45pm.
  • Tuesday, April 2nd –  – Leave WEJ at 10:15am – on ice from 11am-12pm – Return to WEj by 12:45pm.

Volunteers

We are looking for volunteers for each day.

We need 2 parents with large vehicles to transport our skating equipment (helmets & skates) to the arena and then back again to WEJ.

We are also looking for 3-4 parents to walk with us from WEJ to the arena and back again along the paths through our neighborhood.

All parents who volunteer are also welcome to join us on the ice and skate!

If your child has never skated before and/or does not have any equipment, we will make sure to provide them with skates and a helmet. I was a figure skater my whole life and a coach who used to teach Canskate (Learn to Skate program run through Skate Canada) so I will be able to help out any students who are just learning.

I am putting this blog post out now so I can ensure that we have enough parent volunteers to be able to go on this trip. Please email me at laura. argue@ocdsb.ca if you can help us out on one of these days.

Thanks so much for considering! I am so looking forward to a great time on the ice!

Ms. Argue 🙂

Homework Duotangs are back this week!

You will notice that your child is bringing home their orange homework duotang tonight. In it, is a sheet that that they need to complete over the next week.

In math, we have started our next unit on Measurement and are learning to tell time on analog clocks to the nearest 5 minutes and on digital clocks to the nearest minute. Starting tonight, students need to record the time they went to bed and the time that they woke up and calculate (with your help!) how long they slept each night.

Here is a copy of what I sent home in their homework duotangs tonight:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My Sleep for a Week
As an elapsed time, data collection and graphic activity, students are asked to track when they go to bed and when they wake up for one week. We will use the information (data) gathered in our math program in upcoming weeks. Students are welcome to use exact times or round to the nearest 5, 15 or 30 minute interval.
Date Time that I went to bed Time that I woke up Total hours/minutes of sleep
Tuesday, February 26th
Wednesday, February 27th
Thursday, February 28th
Our Valentines Day Exchange was a HUGE SUCCESS!!
I just wanted to take a moment to thank all of the parents at home who helped their child with creating their kind sentences and clues for their Valentines for all of the students and teachers in our class!! Students had a great time delivering and opening their Valentines and reading all of the kind sentences that their classmates wrote. They also had so much fun trying to figure out who made them the Valentine. Thanks again for all your support with this!
I just wanted to remind everyone that tomorrow, Friday, February 15th, is a PA day so there is no school for students and Monday, February 18th is Family Day so there is no school for students and teachers.
I hope everyone has a great long weekend! I will see all of my students again on Tuesday ready for our Scientists in Schools workshop.
Thanks again!
Valentines Exchange tomorrow!
This is just a reminder that tomorrow in class we will be doing our Valentine’s Day exchange! Please send your child in with their valentines in the red folder that I sent home a couple of weeks ago. Your child should have a valentine for everyone in the class plus a kind sentence about the person they are sending it to! And instead of signing their name, they get to write 2-3 clues about themselves!
Here is the link to my original blog post about this:
Only 10 more sleeps until…
With today being a snow day and our school being closed, students could work on finishing up their valentines for their classmates! Remember – they can be store bought, hand made or made on the computer – the choice is yours!
Stay safe today and see you all tomorrow on Valentine’s Day!
School Closed Tomorrow – Wed. Feb. 13th, 2019
I just wanted to let everyone know that all OCDSB schools will be closed Wednesday, February 13th, 2019 to students, teachers & other staff. So that means that WEJ will be closed tomorrow. Here is the post put out by the OCDSB this afternoon:
Due to significant combination of heavy snow and strong winds forecast for this evening and overnight, all OCDSB schools and administrative offices will be closed Wednesday, February 13, 2019. This includes all extended day programs, third party on-site childcare services, community use permits, after school programs, night school and committee meetings. Parents are asked to make alternate childcare arrangements as there will be no school bus service and school buildings will not be open to students.
The closure of schools and buildings is an unusual step and has been made for the safety of students, staff and the community.  The school district has been monitoring weather forecasts and has been in communication with the City of Ottawa, Ottawa Police, OSTA and our co-terminous school boards over the course of the day.  Given the large accumulation of snow and concerns about road safety, we recognize that travel during peak hours could be hazardous and should be limited.
Schools and buildings are closed to staff as well as students.  Information regarding closures will be posted on school and district websites.  The network is expected to be fully operational.  Facilities staff will be contacted by the Supervisor of Operations and/or Area Supervisor with regards to reporting to work on Wednesday in order to prepare schools and buildings for Thursday.
All schools and administration sites are expected to resume regular operations on Thursday, February 14, 2019.  Our Facilities staff will begin preparations tomorrow to ensure that walkways and access to schools and buildings are safe for the students and staff to return on Thursday.
MFI Information Night – Thurs. Feb. 7th at 6:30pm!
I just wanted to remind you that WEJ will be hosting its Middle French Immersion (MFI) information night tomorrow (Thursday, February 7th) at 6:30pm. Please attend if your child is thinking of or going into the MFI program next year so that all of your questions can be answered!
Also, a reminder that the MFI/English program letters of intent are due next week by Friday, February 15th.
Thanks!
Ms. Argue 🙂
No Homework Duotangs this week or next week!
I just wanted to give you all a heads up that you will not see your child’s orange homework duotang coming home this week or next week. Instead, I want them to use the time to complete their Valentine’s for their classmates which includes one kind sentence about the person they are sending it to and 2-3 clues about themselves so students in the class can guess who the Valentine is from. All Valentine’s are due on Thursday, February 14th and they can be store bought, made on the computer or handmade – the choice is yours!
Year after year this has been such a fun activity to do with my class and it truly makes everyone feel good when they read kind things about themselves and also knowing that you are putting a smile on other people’s faces! Trying to figure out who sent you the Valentine is always great fun too!
Please let me know if you have any questions!
Thanks for your support!
Ms. Argue 🙂
