In Science, we are learning all about PLANTS! So it seemed appropriate to read a book in Language Arts class called, “The Great Kapok Tree” by Lynne Cherry.
This book is about the amazing Kapok tree that lives in the rain forest and all of the animals that depend on this tree for their own survival. A young man comes into the rain forest and wants to chop it down. As he is about to do this, he becomes tired and falls asleep at the foot of the tree. While he is sleeping, all of the animals that live and depend on the tree come out and whisper in his ear why he should not cut down this tree.
As a class, we created a list of all of the reasons why the young man should not cut down the Kapok tree.
After we brainstormed this list as a class, students had to pick which living thing they thought had the best reason for not cutting down the Kapok tree and use their own ideas and ideas from the text to support their answer.
Their response to this question is coming home tonight! Please read it over to see what your child came up with and then sign it and return it for a chance for your child to earn $500 to their class bank account.
In the next week, we will be looking at real images of a Kapok tree and learning about some of the adaptations that it has made in order to survive in its habitat. We will also be looking at other plant species as students will be creating their own plant as the culminating activity for our Science unit.
