Homework Tonight – Your FAVOURITE Olympic Moment!

Today in class, we watched some video clips of some of our favourite moments that happened in the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang. This week, we will begin to start the brainstorming process and generate ideas for a newspaper article about our favourite Olympic moment in PyeongChang. Students get to pick their favourite moment from these Winter Olympic games and write their own newspaper article about it in class.

For Homework Tonight:

I have asked students to pick a favourite moment and to write down the 5 W’s about that moment on a cue card or piece of lined paper. The 5 W’s are: Who? What? Where? When? Why? Students need to write who is involved in their favourite moment, what happened, where did it happen, when did it happen and why it happened in point form or jot notes. Students will then be recording this information on a sheet that I will provide them with tomorrow in class. If they complete this at home tonight, they have a chance to earn $500 to their in school bank account.

Here are some of the highlights of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics that we talked about in class:

Toonie Tuesday is tomorrow!

Dear Parents and Students,

WEJ is participating, along with many of the rest of the schools in the OCDSB, in the Toonie Tuesday fundraising initiative on Tuesday, February 27th. Toonie Tuesday supports the Education Foundation of Ottawa (EFO) and works with the OCDSB to help provide funding for individual students in the board who have various monetary needs because of financial hardship. All funds raised through this one-day event will go directly to EFO’s Students in Crisis Fund which supports the extraordinary and emergency needs of individual students including food, clothing, and medical needs.

We are asking that each student bring in a toonie on Tuesday, February 27th to help support this very worthwhile cause.

Thanks for your support!

The 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics!

The 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics are all we have been talking about in class the last couple of weeks!

Canadian athletes did a great job representing our country in 15 different winter sports.

In class, before the Olympic games started, students had the opportunity to design a piece of Olympic clothing that our Canadian athletes could wear throughout the games. We talked about what colours the clothing might be that would show that they are representing Team Canada. We also talked about what symbols might be on the clothing that would relate to Canada and the Olympics. Here is the clothing that students created!

During the Olympic games, we were also very fortunate to have one of my former students come in and talk to our class about what it is like to be an amateur athlete. Her name is Alexa Chick and she is the daughter of Ms. Chick, a grade 1/2 teacher at our school. She is a freestyle skier who specializes in moguls and is hoping to make the Olympic team in 2022. She talked to our class about the type of year round training that is involved in her sport and the team of people that she has been behind her to help reach her goals. She even brought in her skis to show us how they are different from traditional downhill skis. Here are some pictures from her presentation:

Students have also had the opportunity to follow along with our Canadian athletes in PyeongChang in our their own OLYMPIC JOURNAL!

These journals were put out by the Canadian Olympic School Program and I got them printed out in colour for each student in our class! Each day, we got to see what sports were going on in the games and learned about our Canadian athletes along the way. Here are some examples of what students had to write about:

We also had the amazing opportunity to have Rock Solid Productions come into WEJ to teach our class all about Curling! Students had a workshop in the gym called “Rocks & Rings” and learned all about the game of curling and got a chance to play. Ms. Steen was teaching that day so here are some pictures from her of our class in action!

Students have also had a chance to learn about the similarities and differences of the Olympic games in past compared to the present with Mrs. Steen.

In the next couple of weeks, students will be finishing up their Olympic journals, learning to draw a picture of PyeongChang’s mascot “Soohorang” and writing a newspaper article about their favourite Olympic moment at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics! Stay tuned to see more great pictures of your child’s work!

Valentines Exchange tomorrow!

Just a reminder that tomorrow is our Valentine’s Day Card Exchange!

Students are to bring in a Valentine for everyone in our class tomorrow! Each Valentine should have one kind sentence and a couple of clues about the person it is from. Valentines can be hand made, store bought or made on the computer – your choice! The Valentine for Ms. Argue has to be hand made if possible. I gave students some time in class today to work on one.

Here is the link to the Full Blog Post about our Valentine’s Day Exchange:

8 more sleeps until…

THANKS for your support!

Math – Measurement

We are on to our new unit in math which is Measurement!

Today in class, we talked about millimeters (mm), centimeters (cm), meters (m) and km (km). As a class, we discussed how big each unit was and what types of things we might measure with it. Here is what we came up with:

Students then had a chance to start measuring things!

Here is what they had to complete:

Tomorrow, we will be discussing what approach students took to measuring how tall they are and what units they chose to measure themselves in.
