In Social Studies, Ms. Steen will be wrapping up our unit on Living and Working in Ontario. Last Friday, she introduced to students the final task that they would be completing which is a brochure! Here is a message from Ms. Steen about the brochure:
Social Studies Final Project
We have been learning about living and working in Ontario. Now it’s time to demonstrate what you have learned by creating a brochure! You are going to create an illustrated brochure about one of the following communities: Hamilton, Sudbury, Toronto, Niagara Falls, Thunder Bay, Ottawa, Dryden, Muskoka, or Timmins.
When you are researching your community, be sure to look for:
- A description of your community.
- How is the land used?
- How does the community contribute to human needs / wants?
- Are there any natural resources?
- How does the land use impact the environment?
- What are the municipalities?
- What kinds of job opportunities are there?
- What can people do for fun if they are visiting the community?
- A map of Ontario with your community labelled on it.
To be completed in class
First, students will use the planner and checklist to help them research about their community and organize their ideas.
Next, they will write a rough draft of your brochure. Don’t forget to use our success criteria to help you in this process!
Finally, students will conference with the teacher and then they will publish a good copy of their brochure.
Be sure to include pictures, diagrams, and maps to showcase your community and convince readers that it would be a great place to visit!
Remember, all of your work is done at school! If you want to do some research at home and bring it in, that’s fine. All of the writing will be done during school time!
The goal is to have the brochures finished before students leave for the holiday break! Will be staring a new science unit in the new year.
