So….I received 2 videos from Mme. Gunn yesterday of our class singing JINGLE BELL ROCK and FELIZ NAVIDAD…WOW!!! What a performance! Our class sang with Ms. Jorgensen’s and Ms. Khan’s grade 2 class and well as Mr. Stratford’s grade 2 class with Mr. Stratford on guitar!! Students did a great rendition of Jingle Bell Rock and sang Feliz Navidad in 5 languages – Spanish, French, Mandarin, Arabic, Russian and English.

I just wanted to take the time to thank Ms. Steen and all the other teachers and students involved in putting on such a great performance at WEJ’s holiday concert this year! Great job everyone!!

Social Studies – Final Project

In Social Studies, Ms. Steen will be wrapping up our unit on Living and Working in Ontario. Last Friday, she introduced to students the final task that they would be completing which is a brochure! Here is a message from Ms. Steen about the brochure:

Social Studies Final Project

We have been learning about living and working in Ontario. Now it’s time to demonstrate what you have learned by creating a brochure! You are going to create an illustrated brochure about one of the following communities: Hamilton, Sudbury, Toronto, Niagara Falls, Thunder Bay, Ottawa, Dryden, Muskoka, or Timmins.

When you are researching your community, be sure to look for:

  • A description of your community.
  • How is the land used?
  • How does the community contribute to human needs / wants?
  • Are there any natural resources?
  • How does the land use impact the environment?
  • What are the municipalities?
  • What kinds of job opportunities are there?
  • What can people do for fun if they are visiting the community?
  • A map of Ontario with your community labelled on it.

To be completed in class

First, students will use the planner and checklist to help them research about their community and organize their ideas.

Next, they will write a rough draft of your brochure. Don’t forget to use our success criteria to help you in this process!

Finally, students will conference with the teacher and then they will publish a good copy of their brochure.

Be sure to include pictures, diagrams, and maps to showcase your community and convince readers that it would be a great place to visit!

Remember, all of your work is done at school! If you want to do some research at home and bring it in, that’s fine. All of the writing will be done during school time!

The goal is to have the brochures finished before students leave for the holiday break! Will be staring a new science unit in the new year.

HOLIDAY CARDS for SENIORS!

Happy December!
This year, our class will be partnering up with Home Instead Senior Care who provides gifts to seniors over the holiday season and we will be writing HOLIDAY CARDS for SENIORS!
Last year, students at W.E.J. passed on 348 cards to seniors in the Ottawa area. It is a great way to give back to our community and make someone feel special during the holidays.
How can you help?
Students will be creating these cards at school but if you can have any unused Christmas cards in your house that you are not using this year, please send them in!
Thanks for your support!

WEJ December Initiative – Kanata Food Cupboard

Happy December!!

As the holiday season approaches us, WEJ has decided to help out those in need during the holiday season.

This year W. Erskine Johnston has again taken the initiative to get into the festive spirit by supporting ‘The Kanata Food Cupboard.’ In collaboration with one another, the Grade 3 classes will be making many family’s Christmas wishes come true. The grade 3’s will be collecting:

  • Hygiene Products (e.g. deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, shaving cream, toothpaste, toothbrush, bubble bath, Q-tips, soap, face wash, nail clippers, hand sanitizer, mouthwash, etc.)

Participation is voluntary, however we are hoping to be able to achieve our goal in providing these needs to families in our area. All donations need to be made between December 1st – 14th and items can be brought in directly to your child’s classroom.

Please help make a less fortunate family’s Christmas dreams come true!

Thanks in advance for your support!

Ms. Argue & Ms. Steen 🙂
