MATH – 2-D Geometry Test next Wednesday!

We are wrapping up our 2-D Geometry unit this week! Students have been looking at many two dimensional shapes and what attributes (characteristics) they possess. For example – a rectangle has 4 sides, 4 vertices, 4 square corners and 2 lines of symmetry. Students have also had a chance to look at what makes a shape congruent to another shape (must be the exact same size and shape) and how to sort shapes using a Venn Diagram. We also had a chance to use tangrams to make different puzzles and students had a chance to create their own! On Friday, students get a chance to use pattern blocks to fill in a 2-D shape while using a line of symmetry.

Yesterday, students worked on Sorting Shapes and completed pg. 185 #3-5. Today students looked at Geometric patterns and started pg. 187 #3-6. If they did not complete this, they can finish it at home.

I am asking students to complete the SKILLS BANK at home to review for the test next week. The questions they are to complete are pg. 188 & 189 # 1-7. Skills Bank will be due on Tuesday and if they complete it and bring it in to show me they will earn $200 to their bank account. 🙂

Please let me know if you have any questions!

Toonie Tuesday!

This past Tuesday, students at WEJ were encouraged to bring in toonie to support the Education Foundation of Ottawa. We forgot to write it in our agendas on Monday as we talking a lot about all of the things we needed for our first Swim to Survive lesson so…if you would still like to bring in a toonie to support this foundation, you can send it in tomorrow or Friday!

THANKS!

Ms. Argue 🙂

Note – There should be a sheet in their agenda explaining some more details about this great cause 🙂 Thanks!

Science – FORCES unit!

We are finishing up our forces unit in the next couple of weeks. On Monday, we  will be looking at forces that occur in nature. I have signed out the laptops for our class to use to complete an assignment using a website. If you have a pair of head phones/ear buds that you can send in with your child on Monday, that would be great! There are a few videos for them to watch and having a pair of head phones who help out greatly. If you don’t have any, not to worry – we have some at school that they can borrow.

I had a few students who were away all last week so they just completed the Forces mini quiz yesterday during Library. I will sending home the marked science mini quizzes on Monday and I will be putting details on the blog about the Forces assignment that we will be starting next week.

THANKS!

Have a great weekend!

Note about Fri. Feb. 20th & Thurs. Feb. 26th

I have been asked by Ms. Burans to accompany the junior and intermediate students as a teacher supervisor on their outdoor activity days to Mount Pakenham. I will be helping  out the cross country skiers on Friday, February 20th  & Thursday, February 29th.

Mr. Baird, a grade 4 teacher at our school who loves technology, will be teaching my class during the two days that I will be at Mount Pakenham. He will be completing a mini Media Studies Unit (which ties into our Language Arts program) and will working to create a short 2 minute stop motion movie using iStopMotion and iMovie.

This Friday students will be put into groups and start the planning process which involves storyboarding and pre-production (backgrounds and characters). Next Thursday students will be filming and completing post-production work (editing, titles/credits, sound, etc.), and production.

I am sooooo excited to see what my students create!! Stay tuned for the finished products!
